Countertop Supports

There is a question that comes up quite frequently in the granite/stone fabrication world. That questions is, “What can I use for supports for my island or peninsula?”.

This is a great question and there are a few different options out there. The rule of thumb is anything over 8″ of overhang needs to be supported. You can use metal brackets or corbels.

Metal L Brackets/Flat Brackets

Metal brackets support and strengthen stone countertops to help avoid potential breaks. They have a “hidden” appearance. You can typically see these bars underneath the stone (flat brackets) and if using L brackets you can see the L section of the bracket but it is not as noticeable as the metal/wood corbels.

Metal and Wood Corbels

Metal and wood corbels support and strengthen the stone countertops just like the Metal L and flat brackets. These corbels are more of a decorative appearance. Below is a link to an article on Houzz showing different kinds of wood corbels that are absolutely beautiful! Please check it out!
